The success or failure of a software development project rests heavily on the preparation and planning done before the first line of code is written. My skills and experience are best taken advantage of when I am involved in the early stages
of a project. Post-deployment issues such as system maintenance, customer support, daily operational processes and the ease of system expansion in both foreseen and unexpected directions should all be addressed in the early-stage system development plan.
My role is to ensure that the creation of feature-rich, stable software is realized with a minimum expenditure of resources
(including money and time) while achieving results that revolutionize markets. The key to a successful Internet based business is not just the creation of a great customer-facing application, but also to leverage technology to minimize operational costs
in the 'back-office'.
Areas of Personal Strength
I am a passionate follower of technology and have an intuitive sense of market trends and directions. The value of any knowledge
of technology lies in how well it can be applied to a specific task. Skill-set aside, my understanding of technology as it is applied for use in business and industry is extremely broad. I have worked with ‘C’ level managers and IT staff, with small business and Fortune 500 companies, with software development, IT infrastructure and high-tech product sales. I have created software for companies around the world and have collaborated with teams on every major continent. My two decades of real-world experience with a wide array of technologies, companies, industries and applications provides me with a broad knowledge base I can apply towards future projects.
I have managed software development
, technical support and high-tech sales teams from small close-knit groups to multi-state regions to global networks in a dozen countries. I’ve led green and veteran team members to achieve company-setting records. I understand the harsh realities of survival on the entrepreneurial front and have helped industry giants ease the transition of critical staff members to new markets. I understand the importance of team morale and my passion for success is contagious to those who work with me. I lead development teams by example. I will consistently be the hardest working and most productive member of any team.
I have significant experience crafting Requirements Documents, Functional Specifications and customer facing Product Documentation. I have written successful business and project plans. My professional writing can be found in numerous trade and industry publications
. I am a fair wordsmith with marketing experience in several mediums. I have significant public speaking experience including product demonstrations, trade show presentation/sales, representation on industry boards, large format training seminars and production of special events.
Areas of Expertise
Internet Software Development: I have significant experience organizing, planning and executing large-scale projects from vision to deployment. I am adamant about clearly defined project specifications, projecting necessary resources and setting realistic timelines.
My achievements in software design speak for themselves. I strongly encourage you to contact me and let me show you some of my work. These are not merely websites or demonstrations of flashy code, but fully functional business solutions that push the edge of what can be achieved with Internet technologies.
Although I will always support the use of the best technology for any particular project, I am an unapologetic advocate of open source technologies (PHP, MySQL, Apache, OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, Perl, Cyrus, Postfix, CUPS, etc.) and open-standards based languages (HTML, CSS, JSON, AJAX). Those organizations that believe a Microsoft branded solution is the best choice no matter what the project should consider working with someone else.
I have experience creating sophisticated browser-based software that runs across platforms including mobile and tablet devices.
Visitor Profiling/Internet Marketing: I have pioneered many technologies and methodologies to build detailed profiles of website visitors in support of next-generation Internet marketing programs. I have developed custom environments to maximize the effectiveness of web marketing programs including detailed reporting and analysis showing direct relationship between costs and results. I have written software to dynamically present variable data (web, email and print) on-the-fly to tailor a message for an individual profile.
Significant experience and success generating web traffic through optimization of webpages for Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) as well as strategic Pay Per Click marketing campaigns. Experienced leveraging emerging social networking sites (Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Digg, Reddit) to build grassroots interest in new technologies and services.
Unparalleled experience creating reporting to track effectiveness of other marketing mediums including email, direct mail, periodical advertising and event promotion.
The systems I have designed for this type of technology driven marketing are successfully in use today and I would be happy to demonstrate them to you.
IT/MIS Technology: Outstanding understanding of current and emerging trends in IT technology. I have designed and managed many cloud-based server environments focusing on Amazon's EC2 and S3 technology. I have significant experience creating homogenous computing environments that allow multiple platforms to interoperate as true peers.
Familiarity designing, supporting and integrating enterprise networks that include Windows (2003,XP,Vista,7), UNIX (Solaris, Linux, xBSD, Irix, HP/UX, Tandem) and MacOS (OS X and OS X Server) systems. I have experience with multiple domain/directory environments (LDAP, Active Directory, NIS), global VPN design and implementation (router, firewall, IP filtering), data management (disaster recovery, archival policy), advanced communications systems (IMAP/MAPI mail, groupware, remote conferencing), calendaring (iCal,vCal), telephony (Asterisk, AVR), network and enterprise security (anti-virus, PKI, data encryption), 24/7/365 datacenter design and administration, database design and administration (MySQL, MSSQL), Internet server administration (primarily Apache), TCP/IP networking (DNS, DHCP, PPP) and help desk/support system management.
My experience in system design, support systems and IT team management is significant and can be expanded upon at great length should it interest you.
Video and Multimedia: I have experience and a keen interest in production and delivery of rich multimedia over the Internet. This includes streaming video (MPG4, Flash), Podcasting and Flash based multi-media. I have produced and managed several commercial projects to tape and deliver streaming video on-demand for education.
Sales and Sales Management: Classically trained by Dale Carnegie, mentored by grizzled veterans and absolutely fearless when I believe in what I’m representing. I have experience closing million dollar sales in Fortune 500 companies as well as impulse sales to consumers. I have developed sales plans, managed sales teams, successfully launched new products and efficiently opened new markets. I have experienced success designing telemarketing operations, direct-mail campaigns and sales training programs.
Server-Side Technology: I have significant experience in developing rich OOP applications using PHP. Although I am familiar with many PHP related frameworks, I have chosen to write my own and deployed software on it for the past five years. I am a long time MySQL user and have excellent database design and analysis experience. Although I have always used them for specialty purposes to support a PHP system, I have written numerous subroutines in Bash, Perl and Python. I created numerous solutions using specialty libraries such as matlib, octave, scipy, OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, CUPS and PostScript.
Code Management: I regularly use code versioning systems (Subversion, Mercurial), bug tracking (bugzilla,BitBucket) and have maintained public open-source libraries.
Systems Administration: I have experience with administration and creating custom links to email systems (Postfix,Exchange) including bounce parsers, metered delivery based on domain host and delivery tracking. I have integrated solutions with directories including LDAP, Active Directory and Open Directory. I have significant experience creating read/write gateways into proprietary data environments such as SAP, AS/400 and a number of accounting platforms.
Vertical Market Experience: Previous projects have left me with a high-level of understanding for data integration, compliance and deployment to Real Estate, Mortgage, Commercial Print and Legal markets.
Desktop Publishing: I have decades of experience with popular publishing softare such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illutrator, Quark XPress and Acrobat Professional.
